Rewards come with dedication

- James Whelan, operations manager NSW, ANC

What do you do all day?

I manage the day-to-day operations for the ad hoc fleet, home delivery courier fleet and parcel fleet. I also manage driver recruitment and driver training including customer service training for teams working on specific brands. I primarily work with specific clients such as JB Hi-Fi, Fantastic Furniture and Ikea.

What was your first job at ANC?

I started in March, 2000, by answering an advert for a job as a bicycle courier. This suited me as I was doing a lot of triathlons and the company was great because they were flexible about my hours as I had proven a good, reliable and dedicated bike courier.

Why did you stay with ANC?

I stayed because they’re just honest, open and great to their staff. I only worked for one other courier company for a short period, but noticed that ANC really look after all staff and felt if I worked hard, I would be rewarded for it, which I was. People looked out for me. One particular woman was a great mentor and put me forward when an opportunity arose. ANC was with me through the good and the bad so when I went through some issues in my personal life, ANC really cared, they took care of me when they didn’t have to.

Where do you see your career going from here?

I will continue to grow with ANC. I have never asked or had to consider where I’m going because I have always been offered opportunities. I don’t care what I am asked to do, I’ll try my best and see what happens. I’ve always been rewarded for just that. The company encourages me when I lose confidence and rewards me when I do well.

What advice do you have for younger workers?

Have a realistic expectation of where you are. I’ve dealt with many couriers in the industry who expect businesses to support their expectations. You have to earn it, get in there and work hard and you will be rewarded in the right company. It’s not going to be delivered to you by your employer just because you want something and aren’t willing to show you’re dedicated to any task. Look for a company that acknowledges when you do a good job, understands your shortcomings and helps you lift your game, and is patient with you.

No one is perfect and a good company understands that and gives you the opportunity to improve and grow with them.
