Mustangs 20s driven by pride in closing colts rounds

MUSTANGS: The Western Mustangs are in their first season under that name and the colts squad is working to instil pride in their jersey for the future.

Life under the Mustangs banner started well in 2017 as they made the U20 State Cup semi-finals at the start of the year before tackling the FOGS Cup Colts Challenge.

That campaign hasn’t gone as well with the Mustangs in a share of bottom spot ahead of today’s away clash with Wynnum-Manly.

There is still plenty for the Mustangs to play for as Wynnum-Manly is level with them on two wins from 12 games.

That makes today’s game a potential wooden spoon decider with three rounds to play.

Mustangs captain Todd White is happy with the footy his team has been playing and says they want to finish the season as well as they can.

“Pride definitely comes into it,” he said.

“Recently we haven’t been playing bad footy. It’s just that little bit of execution.”

A foundation for next season is already being laid with youngsters like Denzel Burns, Lachlan Perry and James Robinson getting plenty of game time.

“We have got a lot of young boys in the squad so they are getting a lot of experience,” White said.

There are also some players in the last year of the under 20s and playing out the season strongly is important for them.

Jazz Namana is a colts stalwart in his fourth season in the age group.

The versatile talent has been out for much of the Colts Challenge with a knee injury but has been named to play against Wynnum-Manly.

“He deserves to finish the season off,” White said.

Meanwhile, the unbeaten Western Fillies are away to North Ipswich tomorrow in their SEQ Women’s B Division match.
