Six gutsy decorating ideas to try for spring

- — Chris Carroll, realestate.com.au

THERE’S nothing I look forward to more than spring.

Well, apart from my monthly wine delivery, that is. Spring brings with it such a sense of opportunity — especially when it comes to your home.

Spring cleaning is one thing (I highly recommend a purge), but getting gutsy with decorating at this time of the year is another must do.

So shake off those winter blues and consider trying some of the below decorating concepts at your place.

Fortune favours the brave, so let’s grow a set and get styling.

1. Dramatic wallpaper: You know you want to

You’re scared and I hear you. It feels a step too far to wallpaper your space.

But trust me, I have applied wallpaper in homes before with stellar results. If you want to ease into it, try a cloth wallpaper in a block colour.

I installed a black cloth wallpaper for a client recently and it added such warmth to the space.

If you’re feeling extra brave, try a dark floral wallpaper. They’re trending hard at the moment and look awesome.

2. You’re going to do pendants. You are!

You’ve been suffering with standard lights in your home for too long.

Now is the time to finally take the plunge and install a few pendants.

It’s honestly not as daunting as it seems. The biggest setback people face is not knowing how to install the pendant once they have it. But fear not!

Simply find an electrician and tell them you’ve just purchased a pendant for above your dining table and need them to install it. They’ll do the rest – and it’s not very expensive.

3. Colour block a wall on the weekend

This doesn’t require as much guts as wallpapering, because it’s only paint.

Splash it on and if you don’t like it, paint over it. Too easy.

Paint effects don’t have to be bright and colourful if you don’t swing that way. Even mild and subdued tones can be used and the wall can still look dramatic.

Simply tape off certain sections of a wall and create shapes on it using different coloured paint.

This is a great activity to get the kids involved in too. Fun for the whole family!

4. Let’s all embrace millennial pink

The hottest hue taking the country by storm right now is millennial pink.

It’s a soft shade that works with a tonne of other colours. Dusty greys, oatmeal tones, navy blues and wondrous whites all work well here.

Millennial pink is also great in providing contrast in a space that feels quite hard or masculine. An industrial interior that sports concrete and metals would bode really well for a millennial pink hit.

Of course, if you’re already a pink lover, you can bring this shade into an existing pink space with equally impressive results.

5. Take greenery to the next level

The indoor plant trend landed already. Now we need to take it to the next level inside your home.

Vertical gardens indoors are the hot new trend for interiors — and my word do they look outstanding.

You can opt for a real-deal living installation or go for a faux option — they both make an impact.

I prefer the latter, truth be told, because it’s a low maintenance option and requires no watering. It’s also going to be better on the budget.

The idea here is to install a huge panel of plants on a wall in your home. The bigger the better.

6. Order yourself some custom neon signage

Neon lights are nothing new. We’ve seen a lot of them about, haven’t we?

What’s not as common is getting a neon sign made that’s custom to you and your family.

Slogans in lit-up neon are a fab way to bring a sense of attitude to a space and you can have them say whatever you like. I’m looking to get “wine time’s a fine time” in hot pink for my kitchen. Because, it’s true.
