Tiernan sets pace in 5k final

-

ATHLETICS: Patrick Tiernan took the race to the best of the best in the men’s 5000m final at the IAAF World Championships in London.

The Toowoomba runner led the field featuring the likes of Britain’s Mo Farah for more than three laps before they reeled him in.

Tiernan finished 11th as Ethiopian Muktar Edris won ahead of Farah to spoil the Brit’s World Championships farewell and bid for the 5000m-10,000m double.

Tiernan went out with the goal of winning the gold medal and thought he could have executed his bold move a little better.

But he did not regret making an aggressive move.

Meanwhile, Sally Pearson completed one of the most remarkable comebacks.

After two years of injuries and numerous obstacles, the 30-year-old had stared down the world record holder and won her second world 100m hurdles title.

“The first thing that comes to mind when I crossed that finish line was obviously excitement and emotion but also proud, so proud,” she said.

Usain Bolt didn’t get the sen-off he deserved at the World Championships though. Bolt received the baton with Jamaica in third in the 4x100m relay, but halfway down the straight he pulled up clutching his left thigh, eventually doing a forward somersault to the ground, to gasps from 60,000 fans at London Stadium.

Bolt was attended to by medics but refused a ride in a wheelchair off the track, instead finally getting up and limping alongside his teammates through to the finish line.
