Comedy idea with hoarded $100 notes

- — DARRYL WILLIAMS, Harristown

ON The Chronicle online recently there was an article about how the Federal Government’s taskforce, among other recommendations, has one recommending that $100 and $50 notes be nano chipped with expiry dates to keep them in circulation.

Apparently the Chinese and our Aussie pesky pensioners are hoarding them, assumed possibly under their mattresses. What a wicked thing to do.

But first, hands up all of those pensioners who have a hoard of those notes? No wonder your beds are uncomfortable.

Hands up all of those pensioners who have a $100 note, or even more so, hands up if you have ever saw one?

Now we are getting the logic.

Pensioners don’t actually often have a $100 note, unless to pay a bill. Let alone have enough to be able to hoard them.

Best comedy idea in weeks.

TRC trip

— RAY HARCH, Toowoomba

THE TRC forecast the trip to Japan would cost $18,000. The TRC stated the actual cost was $34.790.

On May 11 the TRC was asked to provide documents explaining the additional expenditure. May 17, the council sent a spreadsheet showing the cost of the Japan trip was $38,900.62. A different amount, again.

On May 2, I requested further information on items shown on the spread sheet as I believe the ratepayers are entitled to know how their money was spent.

Flights cost $23.370, accommodation and meals $6148 for all delegates, the TRC took guests out for meals costing $1892, gifts for guests $1403.78, rail passes $2450, miscellaneous $3380, tea at Brisbane including alcohol $245.50, taxies $3564, bus to and from Brisbane $720 also $6492 for an interpreter.

From May until July TRC refused to supply receipts for the expenditure.

At the end of July after another request I was finally provided with some receipts in Australian and in Japanese.

As I can’t read Japanese I can’t comment on all costs, I am only commenting on the ones I can read.

No expense has been spared as the TRC was of the opinion it could spent what it liked.

I have sent numerous letters to the TRC asking how and what it spent more than double the cost they quoted to ratepayers.

Maybe because my persistence on this issue has made councillors think about their future as councillors (none are prepared to go on the next trip) because if they continue to spend our rate money on holidays they will find out at the next election they will be replaced.

Not one of the members of the TRC voted against these proposed trips.

The TRC released a statement proposing this trip will create $1.9m in expenditure in Toowoomba due to Japanese students attending the USQ.

They can’t claim praise for this as it was happening decades before there was a TRC.
