Spring polo fashion not just for women
Ahead of the second spring polo game during the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers 2017, reporter KATE DODD chatted with Peter Jackson’s style guru David Jackson to find out the latest trends in men’s fashion
FASHION isn’t just for women.
Especially when it comes to dressing up for events like the fast-approaching spring polo.
The Chronicle spoke to Peter Jackson’s design director David Jackson, to get his views on men’s fashion for events like that.
“Polo doesn’t hold the same kind of old-world stature as it once did,” he said.
“In Australia, we have a pretty contemporary approach to summer tailoring since we have to contend with a much hotter climate.
“I think this is why you see a lot more of Italian-pinspired tailoring and hints of ‘sprezzatura’ style.
“This has manifested into a bustling smart-casual scene, especially when it comes to events like this.”
As for what to actually wear, Mr Jackson suggested to pair a bold blazer or sports jacket with neutrals pant or chino to create a clean break between your upper and lower half.
Alternatively, he said you could take a more tonal approach and mix shades of blue or neutral palettes.
“It’s a pretty gripping statement that works well with a pop of colour in your pocket,” he said.
“Pair your look with a suede loafer for an extra kick of texture or go for the classic derby shoe for a dressier alternative.”
TIE DILEMMA
“Since the Australian workforce has got more comfortable with people getting creative with their tailoring, ties are becoming more of a fun accessory than a 9-5 noose,” Mr Jackson said.
“If you still want to keep the casual vibe, I’d suggest going for a textured knit tie.
“Alternatively a pop of paisley with a punchy knot will never go awry in statement looks.
BOLD STATEMENT
Mr Jackson said there was always going to be room for a statement suit at just about any event in Australia.
“While we love to keep things low key, when we dress up, we do it well,” he said.
“My personal favourite for making an impression on the race track is a three-piece suit with a fine silk tie.
“A cutaway collar is a must have for this look; the broad spread leaves the perfect amount of space to feature a gutsy knot.
“Throw in a pocket square for a little extra flavour.
“I will say that you should always consider the weather.
“If the sun’s beating down, opt for more breathable fabrics like light gauge Merino wool or linen.”
COLOURS
Mr Jackson said sky blue was always a classic colour to liven up outfits and paired perfectly with neutral greys, taupes and earthier tones.
“If you’re wearing navy, I’d definitely recommend a flash of moss or emerald green for powerful contrast that’s sure to tear up the race track.”
HATS
Mr Jackson said if you’ve got the head for it, definitely try a hat.
“Try a classic panama for a sun smart but stylish addition to your outfit.”
Peter Jackson is on level one of Grand Central’s Retail Galleria.
The spring polo will be at Queens Park, Toowooomba, on September 23.
