Nikorima gets Hunt blessing

-

ST GEORGE-bound Ben Hunt has backed Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett’s decision to hand Kodi Nikorima the starting halfback role.

Hunt, who will join the Dragons on a $6 million deal next season, will suit up against his new team on Friday night as the back-up hooker for the Broncos.

Brisbane has moved into the top two with Sam Thaiday as starting No.9.

Thaiday has moved into the hooker’s role following Andrew McCullough’s season-ending knee injury a fortnight ago.

Nikorima has been in the halves alongside Anthony Milford, with Hunt coming in at dummy-half when needed and he is happy with that set-up.

“Kodi is the right option going forward,” Hunt said.

“He has shown that this year. He has played nine games in the halves and won them all.

“He has a lot to work on and improve on but he’s definitely the right option.”

Hunt said he was not worried by the in and out form of the ninth-placed Dragons and wanted to prove to Brisbane fans just where his loyalty lies for now.

“I am a Bronco for the rest of the year and this game is no different,” he said.

“I have watched a few of their (Dragons) games this year and they have a quality side.

“I don’t know if they are too wobbly.

“I know they are fighting to get into the top eight but I believe they have a quality side going into the future.”
