Drama for Dragons in close final

INDOOR CRICKET: It isn’t the best way to progress to the decider but the Toowoomba Dragons are off to the National Indoor Cricket League south-east Queensland grand final nonetheless.

Toowoomba took on Toombul in the preliminary final in Brisbane on Saturday and after a tight contest, both teams were locked on 90-90.

Toombul needed two runs off the final ball to win but the Dragons restricted it to one forcing a tie.

Finishing top of the ladder after the regular season proved critical for the Dragons as that higher position on the table saw Toowoomba progress to the grand final.

“We’ll take it any way we can. It was a good, tight game on the weekend,” said Toowoomba captain Lyle Teske, who sat out the preliminary final due to injury and is in doubt for the decider.

Toowoomba will now take on Wynnum-Manly in the grand final at Victoria Point this Saturday night.

Qualifying for the grand final earns the Dragons passage to the national finals in Melbourne from September 1-3 as one of two SEQ representatives.

“That was one of our main goals at the start of the year and to make the grand final,” Teske said.

“It gives us the chance to be best in the state and in the country.”

The Dragons will need to reverse the result of their semi-final on August 5 against Wynnum-Manly, who progressed straight to the decider with a win.

The Toowoomba line-up for the grand final is still to be decided as Dragons, Queensland and Australia captain Teske is racing the clock to be fit.
