Festival’s Scot talent
TLC set for huge 15th celebration
WHETHER you like the taste of Hungarian, French, Syrian, Indian, German, Greek, Chinese or Middle Eastern food, you’re definitely covered in Toowoomba this weekend.
As a city we might be getting used to better food outlets each year, but there is still little that compares to the incredible range on offer each year at the Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival.
Festival chair Gitie House said the offering for the festival’s 15th year would be monumental.
“This year we are highlighting one of the early groups that was established in Toowoomba, so we are celebrating Scottish culture,” she said.
“We’re having a fabulous massed pipe band, Scottish country dancing and Scottish folk dancing that people can join in.
“They will go through the steps and call them out for people.”
She said there were scores
of other acts, both local and from places like Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
There would also be a strong turn-out for Korean cultural displays to celebrate the relationship with Toowoomba’s sister city of Paju in the festival’s 15th year.
Those looking to try out some Chinese cultural exercise like tai chi would
also be covered.
Mrs House said another highlight for Toowoomba locals would be performances by more than 600 local children in choirs and dance troupes.
All up, it added up to more than 35 international food stalls, more than 65 performances by about 1100 performers, more than 100 display and market stalls,
language and cultural activities for the whole family as well as amusement rides, camel rides and an animal farm for the children.
The action-packed festival, held in Queens Park each August, attracts thousands of visitors and was declared a local cultural icon in recent years.
