Amos claims fourth title

MOTORSPORT: Lismore driver Dean Amos has become the second most successful driver in Leyburn Sprints history after winning his fourth successive event on the weekend. The record for most victories in the battle for the Col Furness Memorial Trophy remains with Toowoomba driver Ray Vandersee who won six.

Amos was driving a British-built Gould GR55B, an open wheeler manufactured in 2006.

He won this year with a later model Gould after winning in the three previous years with a 1997 model Gould.

Sprints event spokesman Chris Nixon said Amos set a new sprints record on the 6th of seven runs he had on the 1km course at the weekend.

“He was expected in his 7th run to go under the 40-second mark but he had a gear change problem and failed to become the first driver to break 40 seconds on the current course,” Nixon said.

His record-breaking time on his sixth run was 40.5651 seconds, around two seconds better than the previous record.

North Queensland driver Michael Von Rappard was second in a Dallara in 42.2911 and Neil Lewis, of Brisbane, third in a Fly in 44.3192.

“There was a strong crowd who were not deterred by the windy weather on Saturday,” Nixon said.

“The weather was perfect on Sunday. We are confident when all the figures are tallied, the crowd numbers will be on a par with last year.”
