Family mourns and celebrates ‘cheeky’ Julian

- – Andrew Koubaridis

JULIAN Cadman will forever be remembered as the “cheeky” boy who always brought a smile to the faces of his family.

The seven-year-old has been confirmed as one of the 14 people killed in the terrorist attacks in Spain late last week.

He and his mother Jumarie “Jom” Cadman were struck by a white van as they walked down Barcelona’s Las Ramblas promenade just before 5pm on Thursday.

His devastated family, who initially clung to hope he could have survived the attack, has paid tribute to their little boy in a heartbreaking statement.

It reads: “Julian was a much loved and adored member of our family ... he was so energetic, funny and cheeky, always bringing a smile to our faces. We are so blessed to have had him in our lives and will remember his smiles and hold his memory dear to our hearts.

“We would like to thank all those who helped us in searching for Julian. Your kindness was incredible during a difficult time. We also acknowledge we are not the only family to be affected by the events, our prayers and thoughts are with all people affected.”

A statement from Julian’s school, St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary Lalor Park, said the community was mourning.

Diocese of Parramatta executive director Greg Whitby said the school community was “feeling his loss deeply”.

“Julian was a delightful little boy – curious and energetic with a kind and generous heart. He was much loved by his teachers and fellow students,” he said.

Jom continues to recover in a Barcelona hospital.

Husband Andrew, who arrived in Barcelona from Sydney on Saturday, is by her side.

Family member Debbie Cadman said what the family was experiencing was “beyond words.”

“We appreciate all the prayers and love,” she wrote on Facebook.

“The family has released no information as we wish for privacy. We are receiving incredible support from British and Australian consular officials.”
