Geitz walks for childhood cancer support
MEETING a young cancer patient has given Allora netballer and new mum Laura Geitz a renewed appreciation of her work as a charity ambassador,
Geitz has been working the charity Childhood Cancer Support, which provides accommodation for country kids while they have cancer treatment in Brisbane, for a number of years but giving birth to son Barney six months ago changed her emotional involvement.
“I didn’t realise how many young girls and boys were being affected by cancer at such a young age,” she said.
“You look at these stories and they touch you. Then you become a parent and you realise that the love you have for your child is like nothing else that you can ever imagine.”
“The kids are the inspiration, they’re amazing, they just get on with it ... I feel for the parents now.”
Geitz will be walking in the 5km event as part of the team for Childhood Cancer
Support, along with 13-year-old Brooke Kaluzyn, of the Gold Coast, whose family used the service while she had chemotherapy
for a brain tumour.
“Originally we travelled from the Gold Coast but I was feeling too sick, so we stayed in one of the houses
in Brisbane,” Brooke said.
“I’ll be walking (on Sunday), but mostly talking. I’ll be exercising my mouth too.”
