Fraser on board for Rangers’ mission
If you don’t think there is more to winning football games than scoring 50-metre tries and kicking side-line goals, then you probably have never watched Fraser Donaldson play.
Donaldson is one of the Risdon Cup’s unheralded forward workers and this weekend Toowoomba Rangers’ supporters can expect nothing less from their tireless flanker when they look to keep their season alive against Dalby.
Rangers and Dalby meet in tomorrow’s preliminary final at John Ritter Oval where the winner will progress to next Saturday’s grand final against Goondiwindi while the losers hang up their boots for 2017.
The game shapes as a clash of hard-working packs and smart back-line finishers with Donaldson confident Rangers have the necessary personnel to keep their season alive.
The former Toowoomba Grammar School First XV member is one of numerous players who spend long hours travelling to play Darling Downs rugby.
Donaldson currently lives in Brisbane and works as a doctor in Ipswich.
But after leaving Toowoomba several years ago and playing Brisbane rugby Donaldson elected to return to his playing roots last season when he linked with Rangers.
“I played all my junior rugby in Toowoomba and I have a lot of friends at Rangers so I decided last year to travel up each week to play with them,” Donaldson said.
“We played finals last year but hopefully we can go all the way this season with a win over Dalby on Saturday.
“We won ‘ugly’ last week over Condamine which is good in the way we hung in.
“But we’ve been a little inconsistent this year which we can’t afford to be against a side like Dalby who are so strong across the park.
“Our playing depth has been good this year, and hopefully we can get a few players back on Saturday and earn a crack at Gundy.”
