Yoga is for all, says teacher

- Amy Lyne amy.lyne@thechronicle.com.au

TERRI Thornton has always been in the fitness industry, but she feels stronger than ever with one form of exercise.

And it does not matter who you are when it comes to doing it, anyone can do yoga, according to Ms Thornton who has just opened her own studio.

Ms Thornton is bringing the practice to the northern side of the city with Arise Yoga.

“I have been doing yoga now in Highfields for a couple of years but I have been doing group fitness for a lot longer out there,” Ms Thornton said.

“I have now just literally gone ‘yoga is now for me’.”

❝ I love watching people walk in, and they will walk in and they will be stressed, and as soon as we start it seems to float away.

Ms Thornton has been teaching a yoga-based class for about the past seven years and has been a fully-qualified yoga teacher for the past three.

“I have always been in the fitness industry. I have always been fit and strong and healthy and then when I really started getting into yoga I actually felt stronger than any other form of exercise I had ever done,” she said.

Apart from what it can do physically for the body, Ms Thornton said she loved the mindfulness aspect of yoga.

“I have got three kids and I can drop them off at school and be pulling my hair out and then get to my mat and within five minutes of doing my initial breathing I am zenned,” she said.

Ms Thornton will offer a range of classes at her studio from power classes, to slow flow, gentle flow and a restorative class.

“I love teaching. I love watching people walk in, and they will walk in and they will be stressed, and as soon as we start it seems to float away,” she said.

Arise Yoga will open for the first time with an open day and free slow flow yoga class for everyone tomorrow from 10am to 11am. Its full timetable will then start from Monday.
