HOCKEY: The Toowoomba Hockey women’s preliminary final will be a family affair for one mother and daughter duo.

Champion Queensland masters player Sue Marcussen has played in numerous finals series’ for Past High over the years, but she’ll have a familiar face beside her in daughter Chante when she runs out against Norths at Clyde Park tonight.

Chante has made her way into the A grade squad this season, playing alongside her mother as the Hawks soared into the finals.

Their run this year has been made even more special with a third generation of their lineage acting as coach - Bernie Fox.

Sue Marcussen is only getting better with age and has a straightforward answer when asked if she plans to hang up the stick any time soon.

“Hell no,” she said. “You take a step back when you’re on the field from saying ‘my daughter’ she’s just my teammate when she’s out there.

“Except if something goes wrong like she gets hurt of for some reason she’s not chasing back, I’ll have a go

at her - but that’s a mother thing.”

Seventeen-year-old Chante looks set to take up the role occupied by her mother in the years to come.

But she will have some tough competition.

“She’ll be doing a lot of walking home if she thinks she is pushing me out of the team,” Sue Marcussen said.

“I live, breath and dream of this stuff - it’s awesome.

“She gives me a bit of flack sometimes when she says ‘you’re too old to get to that’ which just keeps it fun.”

Meanwhile, Red Lion and Rangeville meet in the men’s preliminary final with a spot in the grand final on offer for both teams. Toowoomba Hockey preliminary finals
