An elite progeny is up for auction

LOT 6 Ascot Michelin Star M302 (AI) could be a stand-out at the Ascot Bull Sale, according to owner Jim Wedge.

“Overall he’s got a good pedigree, he’s extremely well put together structurally and has a good balance of EBVs,” Mr Wedge said.

Which isn’t surprising considering his bloodlines.

He is the first of the yearling bulls in the Ascot sale from Ascot Hallmark, who sired last year’s top priced bull of $70,000.

“He’s got genetics from top Australian and New Zealand bulls, including Millah Murrah, an Australian record-breaking stud,” Mr Wedge said.

“From a stud point of view or a top-end commercial operation, he ticks every box.

“He’s definitely one of the pick of the bulls in the sale and my personal favourite.”

Mr Wedge said he exhibited many features of his sire with his added length, tremendous depth of flank and thickness right through.

When Mr Wedge caught up with the Rural Weekly, he said the sale bulls had just been moved onto a strong hay-based ration.

“It’s a specially formulated ration,” he said.

“The supplement we use is nutritionist formulated and is added for good foot and scrotal development.

“It also sets up their rumen for when they head off to work.”

Mr Wedge said he and his wife Jackie were particularly excited to offer Lot 4 Ascot International M307 (AI) for sale.

He will be the first progeny of America’s North Dakota SAV International 2020 (sold for $400,000) to be sold in Australia.

“We were one of the first studs to bring semen to Australia from him,” he said.

“No more semen is commercially available in Australia now.

“We like him and he has a real presence and doing ability

and we think he will generate quite a bit of interest.

“He’s extremely thick and powerful for an 18-month-old bull.”

There are four other sons of the international bull in the sale.

In the charolias Mr Wedge said Lot 67 Eldorado L504 (P) was a thick and powerful soft bull.

“He’s one of the better bulls to start off the charolias,” he said.

“He’s DNA tested for the homozygous polled gene as a bonus.

“He’s a meaty, thick bull with an ideal moderate frame size and the dam has a 100% calving record.”

Mr Wedge said they had been working towards the homozygous polled gene for a few years.

“A homozygous bull can be put over a horned cow and the calf will be polled,” he said.

“It’s great for people trying to turn their herd polled in one generation.

“We’ve got 20 of them on offer and it’s a fairly rare gene.”

All bulls in the sale are polled.

Ten days before the sale, Mr Wedge will do final weights on the bulls and scan for eye muscle, fat cover and intramuscular fat.

“We’re extremely happy with the bulls. They are all exhibiting superior muscle, bone and softness,” he said.

“And people who have inspected the bulls already have made similar comments.”

The sale will be held on September 29 at North Toolburra, near Warwick, Queensland.

Ascot will offer 118 polled angus and charolias bulls. Sale catalogues are available now. Contact Ascot for a copy.
