Carabar breaks

WHEN Darren Hegarty decided to branch out and hold an on-property bull sale, he didn’t expect to break a Queensland record.

The down-to-earth Carabar Angus breeder sold Lot 1 Carabar Docklands L36 for $110,000 last week.

Carabar Docklands L36 now holds the record sale price for an angus bull in Queensland, $40,000 short of the Australian record.

It’s been a big year for Mr Hegarty, who showed cattle in Sydney and Brisbane, purchased a new property and also built a sale complex on his 1200-hectare home block at Meandarra in Queensland’s south-west region.

Carabar Docklands L36 has been in the spotlight a few times this year, taking out grand champion bull at both the Brisbane and Sydney Royal Shows.

Mr Hegarty said he was taken back by the sale price and only expected Docklands L36 to achieve between $20–30,000.

Mr Hegarty achieved 100% clearance at his sale last Tuesday, selling all 74 bulls offered for an average price of $9318.

Doclands L36 sold to Shane Adams of East West Angus Stud and Vince Larkin Sharala Ramsey of Larriken Angus for a three-quarter share.

A tiler by trade, Mr Hegarty grew up just south of Meandarra at Dirranband­i before heading to Brisbane for a few years.

When he moved back to the country he decided his block was too small to run commercial cattle so decided to start an angus stud.

Carabar Angus currently has around 450 stud females.

When the Rural Weekly caught up with Mr Hegarty he was flat out delivering bulls to buyers across Queensland and New South Wales.

“I’d previously sold my bulls at the Balonne Bull Sale at Nindigully,” he said.
