Style chats with music and art collaborative project, Cas Klu

Brendan, tell us about Cas Klu.

Cas Klu is a project that started out with me writing songs in my bedroom on an old retro Casiotone Keyboard. I’ve always been drawn to retro gear and sounds. 80s and 90s pop music is a massive influence. Cas Klu then grew into a collaboration project, mixing in other musician’s styles and influences. Styles blended and the result is Cas Klu.

Why did you decide to combine music with art and photography?

It all started when I saw Miami Horror live, Ben Plant (Miami Horrors creative mind) was cleverly mixing art to match the vibe and colour of the music. I was emotional and creatively inspired to try and attempt the same idea.

Who is involved in Cas Klu?

The main members are Brendan Hillier and Candice Bliss, and contributing artists have included Kosta Theodosis (Amy Meredith, Miami Horror, The Kite String Tangle, Cleopold), Timothy McArtney (Asta, Gang Of Youths) and Kyle Lacko (Tidal Peak). The touring member is David Searston.

What style of music and art are you into?

Anything different and weird. If it sparks inspiration or a thought pattern I’m into it.

What’s your background in performance and the like?

I live for performance, it’s a driving force in my life. Art, music, acting — if I can be on stage I go for it. I’ve been creative all my life. Music is my ultimate passion though. It allows me to express my feelings, thoughts and views while being fun and entertaining.

What do you think of the creative scene in Toowoomba?

It’s amazing! Underground is the word I’d use to explain it though. Toowoomba has come a long way creatively in the last year and there is a huge following for the arts. People still aren’t aware of the talent we have — artists, actors, musicians, poets, playwrights and incredible creative minds. I’d urge people to get out and find these people.
