Easton on a roll

Aussie rules gun prepares to pad up for cup

A dream year on the football field reaches a climax this Saturday for Shaye Easton when she lines up for the Dalby Swans in the AFL Darling Downs women’s grand final against the Toowoomba Tigers.

But the end-of-season decider won’t mark the end of Easton’s 2017 playing year.

In three weeks’ time she’ll pad up for the Western Rivers Cup where she’ll look to continue her meteoric rise on the cricket field.

The AFL Darling Downs female player-of-the-year is no slouch either when she steps to the crease.

Easton made her senior cricket debut for the St George Blonde Volcanoes during last year’s inaugural women’s competition at the Western Rivers Cup.

Easton’s efforts at the tournament earned her selection for Queensland at the National Indigenous Cricket Championships.

But pulling on Queensland colours was not the end of the story for Easton.

Her performance at the championships saw her rewarded with an honorary Australian Black Cap.

Easton’s emergence through the Western Rivers Cup competition continues its standing as an indigenous player pathway.

“The tournament has produced Daley Martin, Cameron Moodie, Rhys Gibson and Mason McGlone as Queensland Imparja Cup players,” SWIN chairman Peter Jackson said.

“Shaye and Lisa Goodman have now joined them as the first female players to represent Queensland through the cup.”

The Western Rivers Cup model is a joint initiative by the South West Indigenous Network and Queensland Cricket.

This year’s tournament will be held at Toowoomba’s Captain Cook Reserve from September 29 to October 1.

Some team playing spots are still available. For more information contact nadia@flynn.org.au
