Women can thrive with new program in region
WITH most women and girls not getting enough exercise in a day, a new project has been started to make sure they get moving.
Toowoomba Regional Council’s Thrive project will encourage women and girls of all ages to get active for free or at a low cost.
Councillor Carol Taylor slipped into her active wear to try out kickboxing and hula hooping to launch the program.
“In Queensland research has shown that around 40 per cent of women and girls don’t get the prescribed 30 minutes of gentle exercise a day,” she said.
“So the council has partnered with the Queensland Government under their Get Out, Get Active program. We have got $35,000 to run the
program in the whole region.”
More than 200 free and low-cost activities will be made available for women and girls living across the region from September through to May next year.
The activities will include yoga, hula hooping, mindful walks, Zumba, Konga, kickboxing and strength classes along with outdoor recreation like bush walking, mountain biking, kayaking and archery tag.
“It is really great and personally I know most females leave themselves last and in a busy life you just don’t make time for exercise,” Cr Taylor said.
“But the reality is, if your health isn’t attended to and you don’t feel great, well then you can’t achieve what you want to achieve in a day anyway.”
So Cr Taylor is calling on females to make that time and achieve their 30 minutes a day.
“There is something for everyone, for every level of fitness and for every age group,” she said.
Along with getting active, the Thrive project is also about women and girls trying something new, meeting different people and enjoying times with friends and family. For more information about what is on offer, or to book call the council on 131 872 or visit tr.qld.gov.au/thrive.
