Grumpy’s returns with family vibe

THE famous Grumpy’s Tavern will return next week, with some big changes to the menu, layout and signage.

New owners Nick Luck and Caity Jones, who were previous employees at the restaurant, were handed the keys yesterday ahead of their re-opening on Thursday, September 14.

It will be the first time the doors have opened at Grumpy’s since it was closed without warning in early August.

Mr Luck, who was the head chef under previous owner Michael Fallon, said the biggest changes were the removal of 11 pokies machines and Keno system.

“We’re going to try and make it a little more family-oriented,” he said.

“I think (gambling and the family restaurant idea) clash, and I don’t think one works well with the other.

“I don’t think there will be a loss of trade.

“We’re putting a pool table in and also have some older kids games and a little kids room for the younger kids.”

On top of changes to the layout, Mr Luck said he wanted to appeal more to older children and teenagers.

“If we can put some meals on the menu for those kids under 20, that would be great,” he said.

The restaurant is also getting a slight name change in bid to improve long-term brand recognition.

We’ve got a five-year lease with an option for another five years, so that’s a long time to build a brand,” Mr Luck said.

“We’re moved away from the Steakhouse (name) and will just have it as Grumpy’s Tavern.

“We’ve (still) got 13 cuts of steak, (and) quite a lot of other meals.

“We’ve got smoked meats, and we’re going to keep our crispy-skinned pork belly and the normal pub fares.”
