Buzza in finals frame

- with sports editor Ben Drewe

A YOUNG Wylie Buzza would have dreamt about playing finals footy in September on the big stage.

Six or seven years ago that dream would have involved throwing the Steeden around in the NRL finals.

But now, Buzza is on the verge of playing in an AFL final in front of a packed MCG crowd.

His Geelong Cats take on Richmond at the MCG tonight in a big qualifying final but it looks like Buzza (pictured) will have to wait for his finals opportunity.

The key forward has been named as an emergency, with Cats coach Chris

Scott opting for a smaller line-up with captain Joel Selwood back in the 22.

Back in 2010, rugby league fan Buzza tried out for a schools Australian rules team as a way to get out of a day of school.

That aversion to academia proved life changing in a “sliding doors” moment that put the rising star on a path to the AFL.

Just being in contention for a spot in an AFL team for a big finals match is an incredible achievement, especially considering the small few players from the AFL Darling Downs region who have progressed to play at the top level.

That Buzza is at that level after only picking up a Sherrin at 15 is impressive.

It is certainly testament to the work ethic of the Lockyer Valley youngster along with his obvious athletic ability.

Having made his debut this year and playing a handful of games in the second half of the season, Buzza has somewhat established himself as a genuine option to fill a tall forward role for a strong finals contender like Geelong.

And who knows, Buzza may be called upon at some stage during the finals.

He did make his debut at the last minute following an injury to a team mate in the warm-up for a game.
