Sharing key to happy marriage
Couple celebrates 70th anniversary
THE first time he saw Dulcie Stower, John (known to all as Jack) Stower said, “I’m going to marry that girl”.
The two were 10 years old at the time and first met at Sunday school.
“I always loved her smile,” Mr Stower said.
They had a lot in common - they both lived in the Southbrook district (Mrs Stower about five miles north of the town centre and Mr Stower five miles south) and they both used to ride double to Sunday school with their siblings.
Mr and Mrs Stower were about 16 when they became a couple and they married six years later on September 6, 1947 in the Glennie Chapel in Toowoomba.
Now, in 2017, the happy couple is celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary.
As for their wedding day, Mr and Mrs Stower didn’t remember much except it being a “very happy time”, but Mrs Stower remembered her honeymoon in Sydney with fondness.
“We toured around, had a good look and a very happy time,” she said.
They lived with Mr Stower’s parents on their dairy farm in the Southbrook district, where he worked with his father and brother.
Four years later, the couple brought their own grain farm.
While Mr Stower worked on the farm, Mrs Stower spent about 20 years working as a Sunday school teacher for the St Mary’s Church in Southbrook, which was where she and her husband met.
The happy couple had three children, Greg, Rosanne and Chris. They have three grandchildren, Karagh-Mae,
Karl and Joel and two great-grandchildren, Lilly and Ella.
Mr and Mrs Stower enjoyed several trips during their 70 years together, including travelling all around Australia, particularly Western Australia and the Northern Territory and a trip to Oberammergau in Germany.
“We’ve had a very happy life together,” Mrs Stower said.
“We’ve had our ups and downs but we share everything - the good times and the not-so-good times.
“I feel we’ve had a very happy married life.”
The happy couple will celebrate their anniversary today with their family at Picnic Point.
