MARK and Cindy-Jane Ryan took out the City Reserve Grand Champion prize in The Chronicle Garden Competition, thanks to their joyous garden.

City judge Kim Woods Rabbidge said there was a special atmosphere in the Ryans’ garden at 15-17 Gascony St, Harristown.

“It’s full of joy, and it’s wonderful to see a busy young family engaged in gardening,” she said.

“Apart from excellent plant health and abundant floral displays, there are practical features, such as a very productive veggie garden and orchard, and several quirky elements including games for all ages.

“And while there’s a lot in the garden, there are also quiet places without adornment which are an asset when you have lots happening.”

Mr and Mrs Ryan and their two children Lauren and Naomi work on the garden all year round.

Mr Ryan said it was rewarding to be named a winner when they were up against so many wonderful gardens.

“It is a fantastic reward to get recognition for all the effort we put in throughout the year,” he said.

“We are looking forward to meeting new people as they visit our garden.

“It is one of the best parts of entering the competition each year.

“Our garden will always be here so we might as well have some fun by entering.

“It also gives us the chance to meet other green thumbs.”

The garden is very family-oriented with a giant chess board, oversized dominoes, totem tennis and putting green.

It also features a vegetable garden, fruit trees and a chicken pen.

Mrs Ryan said they loved being outside among the wonders of nature.

“Gardening is our hobby; we don’t do sport or go on many holidays because this is what we love to do all year round,” she said.
