Unique musical talents on show

-

MUSIC is an integral part of Mongolian culture.

Among the unique contributions of Mongolia to the world’s musical culture are the long songs, one of the greatest features of the Mongolian music, overtone singing and morin khuur, the horse-headed fiddle.

Toowoomba audiences will be able to experience what Mongolian music is like when EQUUS performs during the next Twilight Concert at USQ Artsworx on Wednesday, September 20.

The group consists of four musicians of very diverse musical and cultural backgrounds and their debut album Dakshin Kuhn (Southern Man) focuses on the traditional music of Mongolia, sung by world renowned Mongolian throat singer Bukhu, fused with Middle Eastern strings and wind.

The music is about meetings of people and traditions, and of musics.

This unique type of singing involves the production of two distinctively audible pitches at the same time, including a low pedal note, or drone, derived from the fundamental frequency of the vocal cord vibrations, and higher melodic notes that result when the singer’s mouth acts as a filter, selecting one note at a time from among the drone’s natural overtone series pitches.

EQUUS is a bold, imaginative music project that succeeds in the formation of an entirely new sound.

The show is on at 6pm on September 20. A reception in the USQ Arts Gallery will follow the recital – refreshments will be served.
