Staying safe in the great outdoors

-

ONE of the best things about holidays is that there are plenty of activities and adventures to have in the great outdoors but it is also a time to be wary of dangers.

It’s a time when children are more likely to sustain serious injuries.

Remember your actions, no matter how insignificant you may think they are, can affect everyone and may cause an accident.

Following simple rules can reduce the risk of someone being injured or killed.

Here are several suggestions for keeping safe over these holidays.

Be responsible, be safe and have fun.

Be food safe – going on a picnic? Remember food must be kept hot or kept cold to avoid food spoiling.

Be sun safe – remember to slip, slop, slap, slide and seek.

Be insect safe – use repellents to keep the pests at bay like mosquitoes – apply product carefully and as directed.

Be water safe – never swim alone; watch out for others; watch the weather; be aware of the depth of the water before jumping or diving in; never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs; never swim in the dark.

Be hydrated – drink lots of water.

Be play safe – play responsibly; don’t play on broken playground equipment; wear protective gear like a helmet when riding a bike, skateboard; follow the rules.

Be road safe – while walking, riding bicycles or playing near traffic, stop, look, listen and think. Wear a helmet and safety equipment when using your wheels.

Be personally safe – Be alert, avoid being alone, make sure a responsible adult knows where you are; carry a mobile phone with important contact details.
