Massive new sports centre for Glennie

RAIN, hail or shine, The Glennie School sportswomen will be able to train and play in any weather come September next year.

The school has received approval from Toowoomba Regional Council to build a massive extension onto its existing aquatic centre, expected to be complete in a year’s time.

The expansion will feature a learn to swim centre attached to the back of the northern side of the building, a huge new health and fitness centre on the eastern side, and 52 additional carparks, as well as a new drop-off zone.

Two homes on neighbouring Glennie-owned properties will be removed to make way for the new extension.

Features of the new health and fitness centre include three multi-purpose sports courts, general learning classrooms, a staff room and exercise room.

The Glennie School principal Kim Cohen said the expansion would mean The Glennie School would be the only school in Toowoomba to have a three-court indoor sports centre.

She also said the new centre would give them the added benefit of being able to fit the whole school community, from prep to Year 12, during assemblies and times of worship.

“The Glennie School’s vision is to develop in each Glennie girl the intellectual, physical and spiritual potential to be ‘all she can be’ and the new sports and health centre can help us to fulfil this vision,” she said.

“Glennie is committed to empowering our girls to embrace fitness for life through access to all levels of competitive sports as well as social health and fitness activities.

“We understand that while many girls enjoy the competitive nature of sport, we must also cater for the large number who enjoy playing sport for recreational, social and fitness reasons.”

The new learn to swim centre will include a 134sq m indoor pool.

The front of the existing aquatic centre will be developed to include a new entry foyer with a reception/cafe and other rooms.

The school expects the tender process will begin shortly.
