Stresses weaken body’s immunity

- DR JAMES MACKAY, CHIROPRACTOR Dr James MacKay is a chiropractor at HealthGuard Wellness.

FAMILY dramas, financial issues and work stress are things most of us experience in the roller-coaster of life.

Have you ever been so stressed out that you’re unable to stomach food?

Perhaps as a female you may notice your hormone cycle can be inconsistent during times of stress.

Or during a period of prolonged stress you find your immune system weakened, fighting colds and flus even in the middle of summer.

There is a strong link between emotional stress and your physical health.

In times of elevated emotional stress your nervous system, the master control system, goes into “fight or flight” mode as your sympathetic nervous system fires up as part of a survival mechanism.

Short term this is a good thing, however, a prolonged stress response can become damaging to your health as your body moves resources away from your digestive, reproductive and immune systems.

This is part of why your appetite is reduced, digestive upset can occur, libido can drop, or you may start to feel run down.

Here are three tips to support your body during a stressful time.

Engage your creativity. Writing, drawing, painting or even putting on your favourite music and moving your body.

Speaking of moving your body, make sure to keep up your exercise because it has stress-busting benefits. Dance, run, row, lift weights; take your pick.

Chiropractic. Adjustments can help free up tension within your body and assist your nervous system to calm down. Get in touch with your local chiropractor today.
