Trump vows to ‘destroy’ North Korea

- Sarah Blake and Claire Bickers

DONALD Trump has vowed to “totally destroy” North Korea if it doesn’t end its nuclear path.

In his first address to the United Nations, Mr Trump called Kim Jong-un “rocket man” and said the dictator was “on a suicide mission for himself and his regime”.

The US President said if the rogue nation continued its nuclear testing program: “We will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea.

“No nation on Earth has an interest in seeing this band of criminals arm itself with nuclear weapons and missiles,” Mr Trump said.

“If the righteous many do not confront the wicked few, then evil will triumph.”

He said America had “great patience” but North Korea’s actions threatened “the entire world with unthinkable loss of life”.

The UN had a responsibility to stop the “terrorists and extremists” who had “gathered and grown in strength to every region in the planet”, he added.

“Authoritarian powers seek to collapse the values systems and alliances that prevented conflict and tilted the world toward freedom since World War II,” he said.

“To put it simply, we meet at a time of both immense promise and great peril.

“It is entirely up to us whether we lift the world up to new heights or let it fall into a valley of disrepair.

“Major portions of the world are in conflict, and some, in fact, are going to hell.”

Mr Trump criticised the “unfair cost burden” shouldered by the US in funding the UN, saying it paid more than the 22% it was recognised for, but if peace could be secured it would be a worthwhile investment.

In response, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told Sunrise yesterday that Mr Trump was just “stating the reality”, not inflaming the situation.

“It is very important that North Korea understands that if it attacks the US or its allies, as the President said, the United States will respond – and respond in a way that would end the North Korean regime,” Mr Turnbull said.

The PM said he believed Mr Kim would be unlikely to follow launch an attack.

“I don’t think this guy will commit suicide,” he said.
