MEET BUDDY THE CAT OF THE YAER

- Kate Dodd kate.dodd@thechronicle.com.au

FORGET about Geoffrey Rush or Gina Jeffreys Buddy the Cat is Toowoomba’s newest celebrity.

Greencross Vets South Toowoomba is home to the 18-year-old moggy, who is a superstar in his own right.

He’s such a favourite among the vets, staff and clients of the clinic - and even people who aren’t cat or animal lovers - that he’s finally had his “mewment” and been awarded Dermcare Clinic Cat of the Year 2017 Queensland State Winner.

Practice manager Nicole Hardy was full of pride for Buddy.

“The award hasn’t changed him at all,” she said.

She said Buddy was a very spoilt cat who won over anyone he met.

Buddy first came to the clinic eight years ago as a patient. His family couldn’t keep him any more, so after much pleading on Mrs Hardy’s part, he became the clinic cat.

It’s a role he took very seriously (as his stripey blue tie shows) and he loved to escort people to their cars as they left and walk alongside them to welcome them to the clinic.

Mrs Hardy said he was so special he even won over people who didn’t like animals - and people who weren’t cat lovers.

“He just feeds off the love, he’s a very affectionate little fella,” she said. “People come in here - they don’t care about us, they just want to see Buddy.

“Even people who don’t come to the clinic (for their animals) just want to come and say hello to him.”

The practice will celebrate Buddy’s win with a barbecue at a later date. Follow Buddy’s adventures on his Facebook page.
