Backlash from neighbours after ‘No’ vote letter

-

A LENGTHY letter advocating for a “No’’ vote in the same-sex marriage plebiscite has left some Kearneys Spring residents perplexed.

Stacey Gwatking came home to see a letter in her mailbox signed by “Greg’’ that went into great detail to explain to neighbours why he would not be voting in favour of marriage equality.

“Not all ideas are good ideas. This is very much the case with this issue,” the letter reads.

“To teach children that sexuality is fluid is a wrong idea; or (to) go to whatever bathroom facilities they identify with at the time, is a bad idea.”

Ms Gwatking, who received Greg’s letter on Tuesday, was frustrated that a neighbour would go to such extreme lengths to express their opinion.

The letter was distributed through her street and at least one other in Kearneys Spring.

“I guess I was really annoyed that someone felt the need to write a letter and put it in my letterbox,” Ms Gwatking said.

“I’m all for people having their opinion and their choice, that’s our nature, but not for putting it on our letterbox.”

Greg’s letter went on to express concern for the world his grandchildren will live in should same-sex marriage be legalised Australia.

But the mystery author cautioned that his words were “Not meant to be alarmist, or fear-mongering.”

“These people are not being discriminated against at all, in terms of access to welfare and other benefits,” the letter said.

In light of Greg’s letter, Ms Gwatking is hoping the debate regarding the plebiscite will remain civil in Toowoomba.

“If they’re campaigning that’s what they want to do, but I didn’t expect such a personalised letter from someone specifically,” she said.

“(If I saw him) I would tell him to keep his opinions to himself, they don’t need to be distributed to our neighbourhood.

“It was a bit crass. I feel a bit sad for his grandchildren.”
