The house that Hutchies built

-

NOT many family operated businesses last 10 or 20 years, let alone 100 years.

But that’s exactly what Hutchinson Builders has achieved – marking their 105th anniversary with a dinner at the Empire Theatre’s Armitage Centre.

“That’s a pretty impressive thing,” Hutchinson Builders Toowoomba area manager Robert Weymouth said.

He said the family-run company first started in 1912 in Brisbane and started doing work in the Toowoomba region in the early 1950s.

The Toowoomba office was opened 20 years ago and Mr Weymouth has been looking after it for about 15 years.

“I was a local here growing up and then I went

to Brisbane to start (my career) as a carpenter when I was 21 with Hutchinson,” he said.

“I’ve worked in different positions and moved up the ranks and this year I am celebrating my 30th anniversary here.”

Mr Weymouth said about 300 people attended the celebrations on Wednesday night, including chairman of

directors Scott Hutchinson, who is a fourth generation Hutchinson, managing director Greg Quinn and Toowoomba Regional Council mayor Paul Antonio.

He said Cr Antonio commented on Hutchinson’s involvement in the community – whether it be the many projects undertaken in the region or the charities they’d helped.
