MOST of us want to create the illusion of more space in our homes. I talk a lot about using design tricks to make a small space look bigger, including using cool paint colours and the right furniture placement.

Another effective way to create a sense of space is by using the right flooring. No matter what hard flooring material you choose, be it timber, laminate, vinyl or tiles, here are a few tricks to give your room a more spacious feel.

Firstly, go large.

And by that, I mean choose a larger tile, or a wider timber plank instead of a narrow strip.

This means fewer seams, which will make the floor appear less busy.

The next trick is to lay the flooring parallel to the longest wall. Running the boards this way helps elongate the room.

I also recommend using the same type of flooring in connecting rooms. Consistent flooring helps create the illusion of more space.

Using darker wood flooring will also help make a small room feel bigger.

If it’s paired with the right combination of a cool wall colour and trims, the walls feel like they’re receding which opens things right up.

New flooring and installing it correctly not only creates the appearance of more space, it gives a whole new look to your room.
