Rep plays give something to think about

-

SITTING in the audience of the Toowoomba Repertory Theatre’s Carnival Hour Plays, National Trust member Beris Broderick certainly had something to think about.

There were two plays performed on the night, A Million Civilians and In High Places.

The first was a black comedy by Sydney playwright Mark Macrossan about an architect seeking riches and success in a city of cranes and five-star hotels.

The second was a social comedy by Brisbane playwright Bruce Clark about the PM of Australia, who was about to hold a press conference to announce transferring remaining refugees from the Dugong Creek Correction Centre to China and an office cleaner whose husband was being held in Dugong Creek.

“They were very different plays but they were both entertaining and the actors were very good,” Mrs Broderick said.

“It was a good night, with nice company, it’s nice to get together with people who enjoy the same things as you do. It was very enjoyable.”

Repertory changed the format of the festival for its fifth year, resulting in a more reflective way of how the theatre was progressing.

Convenor Michael Taylor said the one hour to one and a half hour play with no interval was the trend now, giving time to develop the characters more fully, thereby enriching the play.

The winner of the festival will be announced today.
