Drugs to help fight pain

A RAVENSBOURNE man will have to find a new - and cheaper - form of pain medication after being found with a significant amount of marijuana.

A police search of Daryl John Kajewski’s home of 17 years at Ravensbourne on August 4 had turned up 466.06g of marijuana leaf and seed, police prosecutor Julia Wheaton told Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

Police had also found a cone piece and stoker used for smoking the drug, she said.

The 63-year-old told police he had found smoking the drug helped ease the nausea he suffered, Acting Sergeant Wheaton said.

Kajewski’s solicitor Chris Neville (Condon Charles Lawyers) told the court his client instructed that he sustained an injury in a motorcycle crash some years ago and had been on a disability pension since.

His client had found smoking marijuana helped with his nausea and anxiety and that he bought the drug in bulk to use at home where he lived a “quiet life”, Mr Neville said.

His client, who was also a wildlife carer, hadn’t appeared in court for more than 10 years, he said.

Acting Magistrate Roger Stark said despite what the defendant thought of the drug it was illegal.

“You can’t, at this stage, self-medicate with cannabis,” Mr Stark said.

Kajewski was fined $1200.
