Dusty plans to give medal to mum
AFL: Dustin Martin’s Brownlow Medal remains on his bedside table for now, but he says he might give it to his mum.
The newly minted champion was lauded by his Richmond teammates at Punt Rd yesterday before a light session in the sun ahead of Saturday’s grand final.
And while he is still overwhelmed by the attention, he said his mum Kathy might be the one to receive “Charlie”.
“I left it at home (today) – it’s just on my bedside table,” Martin said.
“I’ll probably give it to mum and she can have it at her place, I reckon.”
And if the Tigers can salute against the Crows on Saturday, there could be some more ink on the cards for the tattooed superstar. “Yeah, definitely,” he said. Martin received the medal from last year’s winner Patrick Dangerfield and said he had heard from another previous Brownlow Medallist since the victory.
“I had a few missed calls from Swanny (Dane Swan) at about 5am,” he smiled.
“I’ve had a lot of messages of support, which have been good.”
A call to dad Shane – who watched the count from Auckland after immigration laws were changed to uphold his deportation for links to the Rebels motorcycle club – was also one of his first to make.
“I gave dad a ring straight away – he’s super proud,” Martin said. “He’s over there with his wife and stepdaughters so I’ll give him a call at some stage.”
The Tigers star had his season – in which he became the shortest-priced favourite in Brownlow history – labelled as the most dominant ever by the likes of Leigh Matthews.
“It’s always nice to hear people say nice things about you,” he said. “I appreciate that.”
