Pony set to ride his luck in Super8 rumble

BOXING: He is a one-time poster boy for Toowoomba boxing.

He fought Australia’s toughest and best and has the title belts to show for it.

Mick “Pony” Shaw can look back on a ring career any fighter would be proud of — but he ain’t finished yet.

There’s more business to get done, and on November 25 he’ll be throwing his hat back into the ring when he looks to claim the first Super8 title up for grabs in Toowoomba.

The novel tournament will be held at Rumours International featuring former world, Australian and Queensland champions alongside some veterans and up-and-comers.

The eight confirmed starters for the light-welter to welterweight showdown — offering $20,000 to the winner — are Shaw, Jack Asis, Jamie Hilt, Darkon Dryden, Brad Hemming, Robert Toomey, Jason Kanofski and Alex Ahtong

The format is four first-round fights with the winners advancing to the second round with those two winners meeting in the final.

Each bout is over three rounds. Shaw believes the Super8 is a chance to see how he stacks up against current top-liners including fellow Toowoomba champions Asis and Hilt.

“I think three-round fights, three minute rounds are perfect for me,” Shaw said this week.

“I think anyone on the night, on their game can win the whole thing.

“For me this is about getting in and testing yourself against some great fighters.

“Probably one last time around will do me.

“I’m pretty excited actually.”
