Get to know Ninjago
Four things you should know about the Lego figures before seeing the movie
IF YOU’RE keen to take the kids to the movie (and you haven’t), there’s some things parents should know first.
1. Get acquainted with the TV series first
The Lego Ninjago Movie is set to be one of the most popular family movies this year – but did you know the Ninjago story has been unfolding on DVD since 2011? (And yes, there’s a whole bunch of Lego paraphernalia that goes with it.)
Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu follows a group of ninjas who battle the dark lord Garmadon – and a series of other obstacles – to save Ninjago, and what most parents like about it is that it teaches great lessons to kids.
As one parent shares, “My husband enjoyed watching it along with my children, and I really like that it teaches kids about working as a team. They go on a wonderful thrill ride exploring their amazing ninja world ... It’s going to be one of my kids’ favourite DVDs for a long time, I can tell!”
Side note: If your kids get hooked on this first, they’re way more likely to sit through the entire movie without fidgeting.
2. How is the movie different?
The movie is pretty much a longer, more impressive version of the TV series – with a bigger budget and a more famous cast of vocal talent (including Dave Franco, Olivia Munn, Justin Theroux and Jackie Chan).
If your kids are fans of the TV show – or the first two Lego movies – they’re bound to be wowed by the latest big-screen production.
3. Don’t be turned off by the ninja themes
Yes, the movie is all about ninja battles – but thanks to the fact it’s all made out of Lego, the violence is totally blood-free and very unlikely to scar children for life.
On top of that, there’s no naughty language or inappropriate sexual references, and there’s not one but two non-romantic female heroes your kids are sure to love. Win!
4. Is it going to put parents to sleep?
The review from most parents after seeing the movie is do not expect it to be like The Lego Movie or The Batman Lego
Movie.
These first two build on “adult” movies and themes in a way that is fun for all ages. The Ninjago Movie is based on a range of Lego toys, and as such the storyline is a little less complex.
It doesn’t mean it’s any less fun – and it’s packed with martial arts movie references from the ’80s – just mentally prepare yourself.
