Waller fires back at Winx critics after win No.21

- — Michael Manley

TRAINER Chris Waller said he was pleased Winx had silenced the doubters who had queried her form in Sydney where she won three races at Randwick.

Winx made it 21 wins in a row at the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

“I’m sick of hearing it,” Waller said on RSN yesterday morning of the criticism.

“At her first run back she missed the start by five lengths and won by a length-and-a-half so in effect she won by six-and-a-half lengths.”

Waller said at her second win back from a spell she broke 32 seconds for her last 600m.

“Tell me another horse who can do that other than a superstar sprinter like Black Caviar,” he said

Waller said Winx’s third win back from a spell looked plain but two horses went out at breakneck speed and they finished last and second last.

“It was crazy speed. Sectional times gave her no chance.,” he said.

“Also she was at a mile at her third run back from a spell when she was looking for 2000m.”

Waller said Winx was in the best condition she had ever been.

“She’s a much stronger mare with more cover over her body. Her coat is outstanding with the brown almost turning to copper.”

Waller said it was fantastic to see Winx travel so well in the run in the Turnbull Stakes. He said that the next three weeks were about managing Winx and keeping her safe.

“She’ll do maintenance work over the next fortnight and then one or two proper workouts before the Cox Plate.”
