Riding high after state championship victory
ALTHOUGH characteristically humble about his achievements, Downlands Year 12 student Cameron Moffatt couldn’t be happier with his performance at the recent Marcus Oldham Interschool Equestrian National Championships in Toowoomba.
Cameron was the Queensland team show jumping captain and, riding Dolly Varden, Cameron was awarded National 120cm Show Jumping Champion for 2017.
His win contributed to the team’s overall success, with Queensland named the 2017 Champion State, bringing home the Harry le Bherz trophy for the first time since 2012.
Chef D’Equipe of the Queensland team, Anna Starosta, commended Cameron both on his success as a rider and his leadership role.
“Cameron is a very thoughtful and personable young man and really led by example. We saw the fun side of him at the opening and closing ceremonies and the daily discipline presentations as he very ably assisted the team captain and vice-captain in encouraging everyone to demonstrate the Queensland indomitable spirit,” she said.
Cameron has been representing Downlands in equestrian events since starting at the college in Year 8 in 2013. He has competed around both Queensland and Australia under Downlands colours at many competitions, including venues along the east coast from Rockhampton to Coffs Harbour and Sydney to Melbourne.
Downlands has a proud history of students competing in equestrian events at state, national and international levels and Cameron’s dedication to his chosen sport has seen him rise to the highest ranks.
