CRICKET: The Toowoomba Cavaliers’ quest to reclaiming the Webb Shield begins this weekend in Ipswich.

Coach Kent Reimers is confident the team can win back-to-back despite the added competition of a third team this year.

A Brisbane team has been added to the mix after winning their division two last season.

“They get to step up and play against us and Ipswich this season,” Reimers said.

“It adds a little bit more variety, we sometimes feel like we play against Ipswich for everything.”

The Cavaliers will travel to Ipswich tomorrow for the opening round of the Webb Shield at Ivor Marsden Oval.

Reimers said more Toowoomba cricketers than ever have gotten the call up into the representative side.

This was to fill the gap left by a number of players from last year not returning like Aiden Watterson, Zac Beveridge and Nathan Carroll.

“The success we had last year has attracted these guys to Brisbane clubs,” Remiers said.

“It does hurt at a local level but we have to take it as a compliment.”

The Cavaliers will also be missing Troy Gurski who is taking time off after a big indoor cricket season.

Reimers said there are a few more fresh faces in the side this year.

“We had to look back on last year’s form and use a but of a development policy (when selecting this year’s team),” Reimers said. “We still have a really strong, core group of players.”
