THE WAY WE WERE

-

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY: One hundred years ago today, on October 16, 1917, Alfred George Weise (aged 20), coalminer of Oakey was married to Mary Cross (aged 21) clerk of Gympie in St Patrick’s Church, Toowoomba (which wasn't a Cathedral until 1929) by Father Denis Fouhy. Alfred was the second youngest son of John Carl August Weise (deceased in 1900) and Anna Maria (nee Vohland). Mary was the second daughter of Edmund Cross and Margaret (nee OSullivan). Edmund was the Manager of the Scottish Gympie Gold Mines. From August 31, 1915, Margaret Cross had taken over the lease of the Commercial Hotel, Oakey then she transferred the lease to Mary Weise (her daughter) on April 1, 1919 shortly before the owner of the Hotel, Frederick Batzloff, passed away on April 19. After Marys lease expired in January, 1922, she took over the lease of the Imperial Hotel, Helidon. After that, she was the lessee of the Federal Hotel, Gatton from 1923 to early 1926 ( the lease had just been transferred to Mrs K.A. Glover when the Hotel and 4 other businesses with residences attached burned down on March 28, 1926). Alfred , Mary and family then moved to Wynnum where they ran two refreshment rooms in Florence Street. Their descendants still live in the Wynnum area. This is their wedding photo taken by Stephens Studio, Toowoomba. From left; Margaret (younger sister of the bride known as Venie), Alfred, Mary and William (youngest brother of the groom).
