Wind sends carport flying

WHEN Denis Greentree left for work on Tuesday he pulled out of his carport but when he arrived home – his carport was gone. The 72kmh wind gusts had blown it straight out of the ground.

Mr Greentree left his home in Newtown at 11am and when he returned at 4pm, he pulled into his driveway and got out of his car before he realised something wasn’t right.

“I thought something felt a bit off when I got home but it wasn’t until I got to my front door that I realised my carport was missing,” he said.

“I went and looked out the back window and in the middle of the yard was my carport.

“The wind had lifted it straight over the house, broke the tv antenna on the roof, ripped the clothes line out of the ground and smashed into our back shed before it landed in the yard.

“I was in shock, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

It was a temporary carport, and was driven into the ground using steel pegs.

Mr Greentree’s daughter and partner helped him secure the carport in the backyard so it wouldn’t blow away and cause more damage.

“Part of it is destroyed, I don’t think I’ll be able to fix it. The clothes line is totally destroyed but I think I might be able to fix the dent in the shed,” he said.

State Emergency Services Toowoomba group leader Frank Devlin said crews were ready to respond to any incidents of wild weather and damage should they arise.

Mr Devlin said SES crews helped trim branches from a tree which fell close to a home in Harlaxton overnight Tuesday, but the property was not damaged.

Strong winds also pulled a shade sail from its anchor points at home on Alderley St in South Toowoomba which crews repaired.
