‘Tissue box’ house wins architecture award
A TOOWOOMBA home praised for its simplicity and strength has been recognised at an architecture award ceremony.
House on Guido, affectionately known as the Tissue Box, took out the House of the Year Award in the Australian Institute of Architects 2017 Darling Downs and West Moreton Regional Architecture Awards.
The home was designed by Shane Denman Architects on the Gold Coast.
Director Shane Denman and his son Zak Denman worked on the design of the home, with the clients wanting a modern, minimalistic house.
The Blue Mountain Heights home is rectangular in shape and makes the most of the stunning nature views.
Mr Denman said it took about six months to create.
“The owners wanted a modern, unique design and they had seen other projects we had done showcased on our website,” he said.
“We haven’t designed a lot in the Toowoomba area but we are definitely interested in more work in the Darling Downs.
“We always hope for our work to be recognised when we enter it in awards and it is fantastic to win when we were up against so many great projects.”
The owners of the house are Belle Property real estate agent Matthew De Maid and his partner Rhiannon Trace.
“In our line of work we spend a lot of time in other people’s homes and we wanted to create something different for ourselves,” he said.
“We love the minimalist style, the clean cut lines and coming home to something that just feels good.
“We moved in exactly two years after we signed the contract for the block of land. There were a few challenges with the site, considering it was on a sloped block but we moved in last December.
“We definitely didn’t have it designed with awards in mind; we just wanted something we like.
“There were so many amazing homes on the night so we were surprised but thrilled when ours was named as winner for the region.”
