WHEN Scott McGrath sits down to lunch in Brisbane today in a room full of people who give selflessly to their community each day, he will already feel like a winner.

As a finalist in the QBank Everyday Heroes awards, to be announced today, the humble crime-fighter from Toowoomba knows he will be in good company.

But the Toowoomba Crime Prevention Unit sergeant firmly believes the only reason he’s among such good company is because of the team he oversees, and the groups from the wider community he works with on a daily basis.

“I don’t necessarily think I am a hero but its nice to be recognised, that’s for sure,” Sergeant McGrath said.

“My role is officer in charge and that’s the thing you’re only as good as the team and the people you work with.

“We also have quite a number of volunteers who work with the police and they sit in with our unit.”

Rattling off a long list of groups and organisations that work with the CPU, Sgt McGrath said it was a credit to the Toowoomba community to have people give their time - and he’s humble about his role.

His own contribution is impressive as the deputy chair of the Toowoomba Goodwill Committee, executive committee member of the Rockville Soccer and Garden City Soccer Club, a member of the Toowoomba Leadership Alliance and also helps co-ordinate projects including Road Safety Week and the Rotary Youth Driver Program.

He’s also a regular performer at the annual Child Safety Pantomime, an award-winning program designed to teach children awareness about abuse and bullying.

As the head of the CPU in Toowoomba - a role he’s held for 10 years - it’s more about making communities safer.

“Ultimately our unit works on community engagement especially around at-risk groups or people who need support in our community,” he said.

“We have some key areas work with multicultural groups, elderly, youth, people that I suppose are involved in criminal behaviour to some extent.

“There’s so many organisations that we touch in with and programs they’re running and what we run as well.”

The winners will be announced today.
