NRL game fires up passionate Dragons

Peter Schriek never thought he would be able to watch an NRL game in his home town of Toowoomba let alone his favourite team.

The die-hard Dragons supporter has followed St George for as long as he can remember.

He made the trip to Sydney to watch the Dragons in their last two grand finals in 2010 and 1999.

Each year he travels to Brisbane every time the Dragons play the Brisbane Broncos.

Schriek said all his Christmas’ came at once when he saw the Dragons would be playing in his very own back yard.

“It saves us travelling to go see them,” he said.

“The Dragon army (in the region) is huge, we’ll come in numbers.

“The capacity at the stadium is only about 9500, if it was bigger we would fill it.”

He said you wouldn’t realise the amount of people in regional areas support the Dragons.

“We all come out when we’re winning and when we’re losing we go back our den,” Schriek laughed.

With a stellar line up for 2018, Schriek said the Dragons will put on a show

against the Titans.

“They have a strong forward pack and a very sharp back line,” he said.

“The Titans will have their work cut out for them that’s for sure.”

The Sunday afternoon time slot made the game even more special for the region.

“That’s what football in the Toowoomba region is all about,” Schriek said.

“All of the community goes out to watch footy.”

Even if you’re not a Titans or Dragons fan, Schriek said spectators will still fill the stadium just to see the best players on display.

“We haven’t seen a game like this in history, it’s going to be the biggest came ever in Toowoomba,” he said.

“It will be a full day of football and entertainment and it will be great for the juniors to see the greats in town.”

Details on when tickets will become available are expected to be finalised next week.
