ROMA saleyards has again been named the top selling centre in Australia.

Meat and Livestock Australia says the latest cattle-selling throughput for the 2016-17 financial year totalled 1.4 million head, with Roma Saleyards remaining the largest in the state and, indeed, the country.

The Roma facility’s throughput of 310,535 head was confirmed for the past financial year.

With more than $338 million sold through the facility last year, the Roma saleyards continues to be the preferred facility for beef producers across the region, state and beyond.

Portfolio chair for the Roma Saleyards, Councillor Peter Flynn, said he was delighted that the Roma Saleyards had again come out on top.

“Although the year saw dry conditions across western Queensland, we maintained strong store cattle numbers in 2016/17.

“This is a tribute to the support given to the Roma Saleyards by the various user groups,” Cr Flynn said.

“Having seen plenty of good quality lines, as well as larger consignments of cattle coming in from all over, there has been solid competition and high prices throughout the TOP FACILITY: Councillor Peter Flynn at the Roma Saleyards, which were declared best in the country.

year. While we are only three months in, I’m anticipating 2017/18 overall will see another impressive year for our premier facility.”

Dalby maintained its position as the state’s second-largest selling centre with a total consignment of

209,094 head. CQLX Gracemere remained the third largest in terms of volume, with 132,034 head being consigned over the financial year.

Coming in at fourth position was Emerald with a reported throughput of 90,722 head.

The Roma Saleyards host weekly sales on Tuesday and Thursday.

In other news for the popular saleyards, due to recent wet weather, the main entrance to the Roma Saleyards will remain closed until November 6,

while upgrade works continue.

During this time, alternative access to the Roma Saleyards will remain via Billy Bob Way, with a temporary access built off the end of Primaries Rd to allow entry and exit to the precinct.
