Teen selected for prestigious forum

-

JUST 200 students from across the nation are selected for the prestigious National Youth Science Forum held in Canberra each year.

The Glennie School Year 11 student Amanda Taylor will be one of three students from Toowoomba selected to attend the 35th forum in January.

Rotary is the founding partner of the forum, conducting a rigorous selection process. After applying to Rotary Club of Toowoomba City, Amanda participated in interviews and delivered an impromptu speech before gaining selection.

She is now looking forward to travelling to Canberra next year for the 12-day residential program.

At the forum, Amanda will enjoy visits to science and technology-related laboratories and facilities, on-site tours, university lectures, workshops, social events and group activities that improve communication and presentation skills. These sessions will focus on entrepreneurship, critical thinking, how to work together effectively and more.

Last week, Amanda was invited to Government House for the launch of the 2018 forum and was excited to meet the Governor of Queensland Paul de Jersey.

“In addition to an insightful address from the Governor, I got to meet other students from all over Queensland,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to acquiring new skills at the forum, learning from leaders in the field of science.

”I wish to pursue a career in science or maths and believe attendance at this forum will assist me to make an informed choice about the course I select and which university to attend after completing Year 12.”
