Think about how a number of surfaces can work together in a kitchen; top right, a butler’s sink updates a room and, below right, think about an island bench as a place the family can gather.

THERE are so many opportunities to incorporate great design and functionality features into the kitchen. The kitchen is one of my favourite rooms in the house. By incorporating simple design features, the kitchen can be transformed into a luxurious space.

HIDDEN POWER SOCKETS: Useful spots are on the side of the bench and in the pantry, where you can hide most of your small appliances.

INTEGRATED BIN: No one likes to see unsightly rubbish building up in the home. Integrating bins into a cupboard hides the mess, leaving the area clutter-free.

SWITCH THE SURFACES: Think about a number of surfaces that can work together, like a zig-zag shape of luxurious marble tiles on a splashback and a herringbone pattern in parquetry flooring. Grey cabinetry can also make smooth stone benchtops a beautiful, stand-out feature.

LIGHT IT UP: Lighting is a key element in any kitchen design. Look at mixing task lighting and feature lighting.

Both are important for a functional and stylish kitchen. Other features that really give kitchens a wow factor include a big butler’s sink. Also, consider a T-bone island, which has a dining zone and seating for up to six people to make the area a place the family can gather.
