Title defence next mission

BOXING: For Kris George, there is no plan “B”.

This is it. Tomorrow, plan “A” will be activated.

The 28-year-old Toowoomba welterweight is on a mission in Sydney this weekend to retain his Commonwealth title belt against Australian Jack Brubaker at Star Casino.

The two share similar records with George winning 12 of his 13 bouts and Brubaker standing at 15 fights for 13 wins.

George has not fought since claiming the vacant Commonwealth championship from Cameron Hammond in Toowoomba last November.

His proposed UK title defence in July against England’s Larry Ekundayo was canned in a late call by promoter Frank Warren.

George returned to square one after that setback and has thrown all his energy at taking a crucial step up the world rankings with victory tomorrow afternoon.

But in a curios fight sideline Brubaker has opted not to put his OFBF welterweight belt on the line against George.

George views that decision as a crack in Brubaker’s armour.

“He’s not putting his OFBF title up on Sunday so that makes me think he’s looking at a plan B after this fight,” George said.

“But I don’t have a plan B. This is plan A for me.

“Every fight is sort of make or break for me and I’m comfortable with that.

“I’ve done all I can in preparing and that helps me keep a calmness going into Sunday.

“Whatever will be, will be now. To me it’s a 50-50 fight.

“We’ll see how it goes and we’ll find out who’s best on the day.

“This is a huge opportunity for me.”
